Every year, I use Rocker 7 Farm in Buckeye, AZ to photograph in the cotton fields or sunflower fields when they are in season. Well, I was so honored when the owner of Rocker 7 Farm herself asked me to take their own family photos at their family ranch. What was even more exciting was that their family ranch was a cattle ranch. So yes! We were going to get cows in the background of our photos. I thrive at capturing different locations such as this.
Family Photos on a Working Cattle Ranch in Buckeye
This session was a little different from the seasonal cotton and sunflower sessions I photograph at Rocker 7 Farm Patch. Instead of meeting at the public farm patch, I was invited to photograph the owners at their private family cattle ranch in Buckeye.
It gave us the opportunity to document their family in a place that is part of their everyday story. The cattle, pastures, animals, and surrounding mountains were not props chosen for a photography session. They were pieces of the life this family has built together, which made the photographs even more meaningful.
I had so much fun at their family ranch in Buckeye, AZ. On the farm, I got to meet a cat, their dog, and even goats! The kids were just adorable and wanted to show me around everywhere. I could imagine myself playing there as a kid and I hope they know the precious place they have and look back on it when they grow up. Having pastures to just run through with animals around, they could learn so much.

A meaningful photography location does not have to be perfectly landscaped or look like something from a magazine. Sometimes the best setting is the place where your children feel free to run, where your animals greet you, and where ordinary family life has unfolded over the years.
Photographing this family at their ranch gave the children space to explore and be completely themselves. Instead of asking them to stand still through the entire session, I could follow their curiosity, let them introduce me to the animals, and capture the expressions that happened naturally along the way.
That is one of my favorite parts of photographing families. We will create the smiling portrait for the wall, but we will also make room for movement, laughter, and all the little things that tell the truth about this season of your life.

The exact starting time changes throughout the year, so I plan each session around that season’s sunset. We will begin early enough to explore the property and capture different combinations before ending with the softest light of the evening.
