WHY THESE FAMILY PHOTOS MATTER SO MUCH
Years ago, I took the very last family photos of my brother-in-law who was later KIA in Iraq. I didn’t realize it at the time, but those images would become absolutely priceless. They were moments that my husband’s family will hold onto forever. Since then, I’ve photographed other families not knowing it would be their last moments together, too. And every single time, it reminds me that this job isn’t just about capturing smiles. It’s about preserving connection, love, and time.
Now as I have adult children of my own, I see this in a whole new way. My kids flip through old photo albums and suddenly remember details they had long forgotten – like maybe how they used to dress…the way their sister laughed when she was younger…or what our family dynamic looked like back then. Isn’t it wild how the brain does that? A single photo can bring back the tiniest, most beautiful pieces of our lives.
As a family photographer, it’s not just about clicking the button and taking the photo and even creating art (while I love to do that)…it’s the importance of freezing this time right now so you can come back to it years from now and see your family all together. Because as parents, we blink…and our babies are grown. Trust me I know that all too well. We think we will remember every little thing, but time softens the edges until we have something to hold onto.
So if you’ve been putting this off—waiting for life to slow down, for your toddler to behave better, or for the “right” time—this is your sign not to wait. These moments are happening now.
