As a Scottsdale destination photographer, I get the chance to work with so many families who are visiting Arizona and escaping their normal schedules, their busy calendars, and honestly… just exhaling for a bit. And this session was exactly that.
This sweet family traveled into Scottsdale and rented a beautiful Airbnb for their stay. Instead of packing everyone into cars, coordinating directions, and navigating a busy location, they chose something different… they chose ease.
And I’ll always be a fan of that.
Because the truth is location doesn’t have to mean a well-known desert trail or a crowded scenic overlook. Sometimes the most meaningful place is exactly where you already are.
Why In-Home Backyard Sessions Just Feel Different
When I arrived at their Airbnb, the light was already doing its thing. It was soft, warm, and honestly kind of magical in the way Arizona light can be.
But what stood out more than anything wasn’t just the setting. It was how relaxed everyone was.
No rushing.
No stress.
No “hurry up, we’re going to be late.”
Just kids being kids, parents settling into vacation mode, and a space that already felt comfortable to them.
That’s the beauty of backyard in-home or Airbnb sessions when you’re traveling. Everything slows down a bit, and it gives us space to create something that feels real instead of forced.
Travel Doesn’t Have to Be About “Tourist Spots”
When people think about booking a photographer while traveling, they often picture iconic desert views, mountains, or well-known Arizona landmarks.
And don’t get me wrong…those are beautiful.
But what I’ve found, over and over again, is that the most meaningful sessions don’t come from checking off a “must-see” location.
They come from connection.
From letting your kids run around the backyard.
From sitting on the pool deck together.
From even getting the swimsuits on and letting them jump in the pool.
From letting the experience feel less forced and more fun.
Letting the Session Turn Into Play
Toward the end of this session, we did something that I absolutely love encouraging and especially with bigger families and kids…
We let go of the plan.
The kids had their swimsuits ready, and instead of calling it a wrap, we let the moment unfold. They jumped into the pool, splashed, laughed, and just fully leaned into vacation mode.
And those moments?
They’re always the ones families remember the most.
Not the perfectly posed photo. Or even a clean patio.
Not the “everyone look at me and smile.”
But the ones that feel like them.
