If you’re here, you’re probably trying to figure out where your session should take place… and I promise, you’re not alone. This is one of the first questions I get as a Phoenix photographer, and honestly it’s one of the most fun parts to plan.
Here’s the good news: you don’t need to have the perfect location picked out.
That’s my job.
Over the years, I’ve photographed family sessions, senior photos, maternity sessions, and couples all across Phoenix and the surrounding Arizona areas. I’ve learned which locations photograph beautifully, which ones give you variety, and which ones just feel right depending on your vibe.
This guide is here to spark ideas, help you visualize your session, and show you what’s possible.
And if you’re still unsure after this? Don’t worry…I’ll help you choose a location that fits you perfectly.

LOCATION,
Let’s make this easy.
Instead of stressing over where, I want you to think about how you want your photos to feel.
That’s always where we start.
Desert Locations in Phoenix

If you’re dreaming of that classic Arizona look with cactus, warm tones, mountains, and golden light…you really can’t go wrong with the desert.
One of my favorite things about Phoenix desert locations is that we can usually find something close to you, whether you’re on the east side or west side.
Some of my go-to spots include:
- Salt River
- White Tank Mountain Regional Park
- Usery Mountain Regional Park
- Papago Park
- Apache Wash Trailhead
And here’s where it gets even better…
Places like Papago Park and Salt River don’t just give you one look. We can find desert, water, mountains, and even palm trees all in one session.
A quick note on Scottsdale desert locations:
Areas like McDowell Sonoran Preserve are beautiful, but they do require hefty daily permits for photography sessions. Because of that, I typically guide my clients toward other desert locations around Phoenix where we can get the same (if not more) variety without the extra steps or restrictions.
STANDARD DESERT VS DRAMATIC DESERT
If you’re drawn to bold scenery, layered mountains, and that more dramatic Arizona backdrop… I’ll guide you toward locations that give us that extra depth.
Some of my favorite spots for this look:
These locations give us those strong mountain views and red rock tones, while still keeping that soft desert feel you see in a lot of my work.
And the best part?
We don’t have to choose just one look.
We can start your session with that soft, golden, glowy light… and as the sun starts to drop, that’s when those more dramatic mountain and red rock tones really come to life.
So you’re getting both without overthinking it.

Green Locations in Phoenix

This is where people are usually surprised.
Yes, we absolutely have green, lush locations in Phoenix and they photograph beautifully.
If you’re wanting something softer, more romantic, or just different from the desert look, this might be your thing.
Some of my favorite green locations in Phoenix:
Some of these even give us a mix of green, historic charm, and a really fun ranch feel with barns, western-style buildings, and little details that add so much character to your photos. Others lean more garden-like with trees, pathways, and soft light filtering through.
And a lot of these locations come with bonus variety…whether that’s water nearby, unique structures, old tractors, fences, or different textures we can use throughout your session. It’s one of the reasons I love shooting in these spaces… they give us so much to work with without needing to go to multiple locations.
When you’re choosing a green location, it really comes down to the feel you’re drawn to.
There’s no right answer here. It just depends on what feels the most like you.

Water Locations

If you want your photos to feel relaxed, a little playful, and full of movement… water is such a fun option.
This is perfect for:
- families with kids who want to move and explore
- seniors who want something a little different
- couples who want a more laid-back vibe
Some favorite Phoenix water locations:
- Salt River
- Tempe Beach Park
- Lake Pleasant
And again, these places can give us different scenery all in one spot… which makes your gallery feel really full and dynamic.
Urban Locations in Phoenix

If you’re drawn to structure, texture, and something a little more editorial, I love an urban session.
This look is perfect if you want something:
Some go-to downtown Phoenix photography locations:
Between the bridges, textures, and city lines, we can create something that feels really clean and elevated.
And what I love about some of these urban locations is that they’re not just one look. Places like Tempe Town Lake can give us that modern, structured feel with the bridges and walkways, but also bring in water for a softer, more relaxed vibe. And Heritage Square Park is such a fun mix too because you get a little bit of green, a little bit of history, and still that subtle downtown feel all in one spot.
So if you’re drawn to something more urban but still want a little variety in your gallery, I’ll usually guide you toward locations that give us both.
Neighborhood & Meaningful Locations
I’m going to say this loud because it matters…
Some of the best sessions I’ve ever photographed didn’t happen at a “popular” location.
They happened:
Places like:
Or somewhere that means something to you.
If you have an idea, I’m always open to it. I love stepping outside the usual spots and creating something that feels personal.

If you’re the type who can’t choose just one vibe… I get it.
That’s where I guide you toward locations like Papago Park or Salt River where we can get multiple looks in one session.
More variety, more movement, more personality in your gallery… without making things complicated.
TRAVEL

If you’re dreaming of something outside of Phoenix, I do travel for sessions in places like:
For sessions beyond a 30-mile radius of Phoenix, a travel fee does apply.
Nothing overwhelming. I’ll go over everything with you ahead of time so it’s clear and easy.
And honestly… Arizona has so many incredible backdrops. Sometimes it’s worth making a little trip out of it.

If you made it this far and you’re still not 100% sure about your location, that’s completely normal.
This guide is here to give you ideas, spark inspiration, and help you start thinking about the vibe you want for your session. The final choice is something we’ll figure out together, but it’s a good idea to start narrowing it down soon so we can make sure we get the perfect backdrop for your outfits, your session length, and the look you’re going for.
If you’re feeling stuck, don’t stress…just reach out and tell me what you’re drawn to, what kind of vibe you love, or even just what photos caught your eye. I’ll help you match it with a location that works perfectly.
You don’t have to overthink it. I’ve got you every step of the way.
