Best Family Photo Locations in Phoenix

Choosing the perfect location is one of the biggest decisions you’ll make when planning family photos. The right setting doesn’t just look beautiful. It also helps everyone feel comfortable, gives your kids room to be themselves, and creates a gallery that truly reflects your family’s personality.

As a Phoenix family photographer, I’ve photographed families all across the Valley. Every location has its own personality, lighting, and advantages. Some are perfect for young children. Others are ideal for grandparents, pets, or families who want those classic Arizona desert views.

If you’re wondering where to take family photos in Phoenix, these are some of my favorite locations and why I love photographing there.

How to Choose the Right Family Photo Location

One of the questions I get asked most often is, “Where should we take our family photos?” My answer is almost always the same: it depends on your family.

The best family photo location isn’t necessarily the prettiest one. It’s the place that fits your family’s personality, keeps everyone comfortable, and creates the overall look you’re dreaming of. After photographing families all over the Phoenix area, I’ve learned that the little details often make the biggest difference.

Think about the ages of your children. If you have toddlers, a location with easy walking paths, open space to explore, and nearby restrooms can make the entire experience much more enjoyable. If grandparents are joining us, choosing a location with minimal walking and accessible paths helps everyone stay relaxed and focused on making memories instead of navigating rough terrain.

It’s also worth thinking about the style you want for your photos. Are you envisioning classic Arizona desert scenery with towering saguaros and mountain views? Maybe you love lush greenery, historic architecture, or even the peaceful look of water. Phoenix offers an incredible variety of landscapes, and each one creates a completely different feel in your final gallery.

The good news is you don’t have to figure it all out on your own. I’ll help you choose a location based on your family’s needs, your vision, and the experience you want to have. 1. White Tank Mountains

Why it’s great: One of the most scenic mountain ranges in the Phoenix area, White Tank Mountains offer a rugged desert landscape with stunning rock formations, cacti, and open skies. The area provides incredible golden hour lighting and plenty of space to explore.

Family-friendly perks: Designated trails offer easy walking options, and there are various nearby restroom facilities all over the park (maybe not directly on trails, but accessible within a short distance). The park is spacious, allowing families to find a more private spot for photos.

2. Sahuaro Ranch Park in Glendale, AZ

Why it’s great: A historic ranch setting with lush greenery, a rustic barn, and plenty of open space. This park offers a unique mix of vintage and natural backdrops, making it a perfect spot for family portraits.

Family-friendly perks: Wide paved pathways make it stroller-friendly, restrooms are available on-site, and there’s even a playground nearby for kids to enjoy before or after the session. A photographer’s permit is required (which is already included in your session cost), ensuring a smooth experience for you without extra fees.

3. Papago Park

Why it’s great: Featuring iconic red rock formations and open desert landscapes, Papago Park provides a mix of adventure and classic Phoenix beauty. The golden hour lighting here is especially magical. I’ve photographed dozens of families here over the years, and one thing I love is how many different looks we can create without walking very far.

Family-friendly perks: Plenty of open space for kids to explore, easy parking, and picnic areas for post-session snacks. Restrooms are available near the main entrance.

4. Manistee Ranch Park in Glendale, AZ

Why it’s great: This charming park offers a beautiful blend of lush greenery, a rustic barn, and historic buildings. The serene atmosphere and picturesque surroundings make it a fantastic spot for family portraits, especially if you’re after a green country feel.

Family-friendly perks: The park is spacious with shaded areas, making it comfortable for families to relax. There are accessible walking paths, but note that there are no restrooms on-site, so plan accordingly. Plenty of open space for children and pets to roam.

5. Scorpion Gulch at South Mountain

Why it’s great: This historic stone structure set against the backdrop of desert hills and cacti adds a rustic, old-world charm to your photos. The textures and natural lighting here create stunning depth.

Family-friendly perks: Parking is close by, and the ground is mostly flat, making it easy for families with strollers or elderly members. However, there are no restrooms on-site, so plan accordingly.

6. Heritage Square

Why it’s great: If you love the charm of historic architecture mixed with nature, Heritage Square offers beautiful brick buildings, garden spaces, and tree-lined paths for a timeless feel.

Family-friendly perks: Nearby coffee shops and restaurants make it easy to grab a treat after your session, and restrooms are available.

7. Salt River

Why it’s great: The Salt River provides a beautiful mix of desert landscapes and river views, offering a unique backdrop for family photos. The striking contrast between the desert and the flowing river creates a tranquil yet dramatic setting, perfect for capturing those special moments.

Family-friendly perks: There are plenty of scenic spots along the river, and families can enjoy the area for some relaxing outdoor time. Although there are no designated restrooms directly at the river, public facilities are available near parking areas. The location is spacious and offers a peaceful, nature-filled experience, especially great for families who love the outdoors.

8. Riparian Preserve at Gilbert Regional Park

Why it’s great: This beautiful preserve features a mix of wetlands and walking trails, offering a lush, green setting that’s perfect for family photos. With its unique blend of water and desert, it provides a stunning backdrop year-round, particularly during golden hour.

Family-friendly perks: The park offers wide, accessible trails and plenty of shaded areas. While restrooms are not available directly at the location where I photograph, there are nearby public facilities. While the preserve can get busy during peak months (October – December), the area where I shoot offers a more peaceful, hidden experience for your family to enjoy nature and create lasting memories.

What Makes a Great Family Photo Location?

When choosing a location for family photos, consider more than just the scenery. Here are some key factors to keep in mind:

✅ Variety of Backdrops: Locations with a mix of greenery, water, or unique architectural elements give you more variety in your final gallery.
✅ Crowd Levels: Popular spots can get busy, so consider time of day and weekdays for a more private experience.

Which Phoenix Family Photo Location Is Right for You?

If you love classic Arizona scenery, White Tank Mountains, Usery Mountains, and Papago Park are hard to beat.

If you want lots of greenery, Sahuaro Ranch, Manistee Ranch, and the  Riparian Preserve at Gilbert Regional Park are wonderful choices.

If you’re hoping for something unique, Heritage Square offers beautiful historic architecture, while Salt River gives you one of the few places near Phoenix where you can combine water with desert scenery.

Which location has the best Arizona desert views?

White Tank Mountains and Papago Park are my favorites for classic Sonoran Desert scenery. But there are plenty of other desert areas too, such as Usery Mountain and Apache Wash Trailhead. I can usually find a nice desert location with large saguaro cactus near where you want to be or not far of a drive.

What's the easiest location with young kids?

Sahuaro Ranch has paved paths, restrooms, shade, and even a playground nearby.

Can we bring our dog?

Many of these locations are pet-friendly, and I'm always happy to include your four-legged family member.
