Why Legacy Family Photos Become Priceless
Most families book a session because everyone happens to be in town at the same time.
What they don’t always realize is that they’re creating something future generations will treasure.
Life moves quickly.
Children grow up.
Grandchildren become adults.
Families spread across different cities and states.
And eventually, loved ones who seem like they’ll always be here are no longer sitting around the dinner table.
The photographs created during a Legacy Session become more than pictures. They become reminders of laughter, connection, traditions, and the people who helped shape a family.
Years from now, a grandchild may look at a photograph with their grandparents and remember the way Grandpa laughed or the way Grandma hugged them.
Those memories become priceless.
Seeing Your Family Legacy Together
One of my favorite parts of being a Phoenix large family photographer is watching grandparents stand back and look at everyone gathered together.
Their children.
Their children’s spouses.
Their grandchildren.
Sometimes even great-grandchildren.
It’s a powerful moment.
Because what they’re really seeing isn’t just a group of people.
They’re seeing a lifetime of love, sacrifice, hard work, and commitment reflected back at them.
They are seeing their legacy.
In a world that often moves too fast, there’s something incredibly meaningful about stopping for a moment and recognizing what has been built over decades.
A family.
A foundation.
A story that continues long after any one person is gone.
Choosing the Right Time for a Legacy Session
A lot of families ask me when they should schedule a Legacy Session. My answer is simple: sooner than you think.
Many families plan these sessions around holidays, reunions, milestone birthdays, anniversaries, or when relatives are visiting from out of town. Those are wonderful opportunities because everyone is already together.
But you don’t need a special occasion.
Sometimes the greatest reason to schedule is simply because everyone is here.
No one knows what life will look like five years from now, but the photographs you create today will only become more meaningful with time.
Why Now Matters
One of the most common things I hear from families is:
“We’ve been talking about doing this for years.”
And while I’m always grateful when they finally schedule the session, I often wish they hadn’t waited.
There will never be a perfect time.
Someone will be busy.
Someone will be traveling.
Someone may not love having their photo taken.
But the truth is that the value of these images only grows over time.
The best time to document your family is while everyone is here to be photographed together.
The smiles, personalities, relationships, and connections you capture today become the memories your family holds onto tomorrow.
Why I Always Photograph the Grandparents
There’s another reason these Legacy Sessions are so important to me personally.
Whenever possible, I make a point to photograph the grandparents on their own.
Not because anyone specifically asks for it, but because I know firsthand how meaningful those images can become.
When my dad passed away, our family faced something I never expected as a photographer.
We realized we didn’t have a single professional portrait of just him.
As we began planning his obituary and gathering photographs, we searched through snapshots, old albums, and family pictures looking for an image that truly felt like him.
And despite being a photographer myself, we didn’t have that portrait.
I can honestly admit that’s a little embarrassing to say out loud.
But it’s also one of the reasons I care so deeply about documenting every generation during a Legacy Session.
Sometimes when families are focused on getting everyone together, they don’t think about creating individual portraits of Mom and Dad, Grandma and Grandpa, or the people who have helped build the family sitting in front of me.
I do.
Because I’ve lived through the moment of wishing I had that photograph.
The reality is that none of us know what the future holds. While these images are beautiful to display in our homes today, they often become even more meaningful years down the road.
A portrait of a grandparent may one day become a treasured family heirloom.
A photograph hanging on the wall.
A picture shared with future generations.
A reminder of the person whose love, guidance, and sacrifices helped shape the family that exists today.
That’s why you’ll often see me pull grandparents aside for a few minutes during a session.
Not because it’s on a shot list.
But because experience has taught me that one day, someone may be incredibly grateful that photograph exists.
