Family photos with little kids rarely unfold in a perfectly straight line. Children this young have their own ideas, their own timing, and very strong opinions about when they would like to be photographed.
This morning at Apache Wash was no exception.
These two little ones gave us playful moments, sweet cuddles, a few big smiles, and yes, some tears too. But that is exactly why I never expect young children to happily pose and smile for an entire session. Honestly, that wouldn’t feel like a real season of family life anyway.
Family Photos With Two Young Children
When children are this young, I move quickly and follow their energy. We might begin with everyone looking at the camera, but then we start walking, lifting, playing, tickling, and letting the kids interact with their parents.
During this session, we captured Dad lifting his little girl into the air, Mom comforting her son beside a giant saguaro, high fives, hand-holding, cuddles, and the whole family laughing together.
There were moments when one child was happy and the other needed a little more reassurance. Then they would switch. That is completely normal.
The goal isn’t to make children perform perfectly. It is to keep watching for the little openings in between. Those are often the moments when their real personalities appear.
The Sweetness Between the Hard Moments
Parents sometimes worry that if their child cries during family photos, the entire session is going badly. From behind my camera, I usually see something very different.
I see a little girl reaching for her mom. I see a little boy relaxing in his dad’s arms. I see parents making their children laugh, helping them feel safe, and loving them through whatever mood arrives.
Those moments matter too.
This family still received the traditional photograph of everyone smiling at the camera, but they also received photographs that show how they interact right now. Their son’s huge laugh, their daughter’s tiny pigtails, the way each child fits into a parent’s arms, and the way the whole family naturally comes together.
When the Session Was Already Over
My favorite part happened when we were completely finished.
The session was officially wrapped up, but I hadn’t put my camera away yet. The kids were finally sitting in the shade, the pressure was off, and the lollipops came out.
Suddenly, there they were.
The biggest smiles of the entire morning appeared, complete with sparkling eyes, tiny teeth, and the sweetest dimples. Because my camera was still in my hands, I was able to capture individual portraits of both children that felt completely natural.
They weren’t being asked to pose anymore. They were simply happy, comfortable, and enjoying their treats.
It was such a good reminder that children don’t need to cooperate perfectly for us to create beautiful photographs. Sometimes we just need to give them a little room, follow their pace, and stay ready for the moment when everything changes.
These Apache Wash family photos captured more than one perfectly posed moment. They captured this entire season of their family: two small children with big personalities, parents who kept loving and playing through it all, and so much sweetness waiting in between.
