Lake Pleasant Family Photos in the Phoenix Desert

Smith Family

Oh, you won’t believe how stunning Lake Pleasant is! It’s like nature showing off its A-game with its gorgeous blue waters and breathtaking sunsets. If you’re up for a little adventure and don’t mind some steep rocks by the water…this is the perfect spot for some unforgettable family photos. Tucked away in the desert, Lake Pleasant is an unexpected oasis in the Phoenix area, and it never fails to take my breath away.

There’s something so magical about driving from the dry, sunbaked desert and suddenly being greeted by the vast expanse of shimmering water. The contrast is jaw-dropping. Lake Pleasant feels like a secret paradise here in the Phoenix area, and it makes for a picture-perfect backdrop for any family session.

Why Choose Lake Pleasant for Family Photos?

Lake Pleasant is one of the most unique family photography locations near Phoenix because it gives you water, desert, mountains, and wide-open skies all in one place. It is a beautiful choice for families who want Arizona scenery but are looking for something different from a traditional cactus-filled desert session.

The combination of blue water and warm desert light creates so much variety in a gallery. Depending on the water level and where we photograph, your images may include rocky shoreline, distant mountains, desert plants, and one of those colorful Arizona sunsets we all love.

Lake Pleasant Regional Park is located northwest of Phoenix in Morristown, making it especially convenient for families in Peoria, Glendale, Surprise, North Phoenix, and other parts of the West Valley.

How My Family Photography Has Continued to Evolve

I’ve been reflecting on how much my style has evolved as a Phoenix photographer, especially looking back at these photos of a lovely family by the water that I captured in 2022. They remind me why I do what I do. As a photographer, I’ve come to realize that the photos we truly treasure on our walls aren’t always the perfectly posed ones with matching smiles. You know the ones…the kind we swap out every year. The real keepers, the ones that stand the test of time, are those that capture the essence of your family, the candid shots, and the moments that are just you.

These are the photos that pull at your heartstrings and become a part of your home. Those spontaneous moments, the laughter, the playfulness, and the connection between family members, they’re the ones that make the memories last. In 2022, I really took a step back and shifted my approach to photography. I started focusing on capturing both the perfectly posed and the spontaneous moments during our sessions. It’s the real, in-the-moment shots that tell the story of who you are as a family.

That’s why I love photography at Lake Pleasant. It’s a place where families can relax, enjoy nature, and just be themselves. Whether you’re climbing on rocks, playing by the water, or simply enjoying the view, this location brings out the best in families. It’s the perfect setting for a session that’s both fun and meaningful.

What to Expect From a Lake Pleasant Photography Session

Lake Pleasant sessions feel a little more adventurous than sessions at many traditional Phoenix locations. We may walk across uneven ground, carefully navigate rocks, or move between the shoreline and higher areas overlooking the water.

Because the shoreline can change as the lake rises and falls, the exact scenery may look different depending on the season. Lake Pleasant is a reservoir within the Central Arizona Project system, and Maricopa County notes that its water level typically reaches its highest point around March or April and its lowest point around October or November. That changing landscape is part of what makes every session here a little different. Lake Pleasant Regional Park provides current information about water levels, park hours, and temporary closures.

This may not be the right location for every family, especially if someone has limited mobility or has difficulty walking on rocky terrain. But if your family is comfortable with a little exploring, the scenery is absolutely worth it.

When Is the Best Time for Lake Pleasant Family Photos?

The best light for family photos at Lake Pleasant is usually during the final part of the day. Photographing close to sunset gives us softer light, warmer skin tones, and the possibility of a colorful sky reflecting across the water.

The exact session time changes throughout the year because Arizona’s sunset time shifts with the seasons. I plan our start time around the light and give us enough time to walk to the photography area without feeling rushed.

Weekends and holidays can also be busier around the lake. The park sometimes limits new entries when parking or shoreline areas reach capacity, so I recommend allowing extra travel time and checking the park’s current alerts before leaving home. Maricopa County’s park updates contain the latest hours and closure information.

What Should You Wear for Lake Pleasant Photos?

Soft neutrals, earthy colors, warm rust tones, muted blues, cream, tan, and dusty pastels all photograph beautifully against the water and desert scenery. Your family does not need to match. Choosing coordinating colors with a mixture of textures usually creates a more natural look.

Shoes are especially important here. I recommend arriving in sturdy, comfortable shoes that can handle dirt and uneven rocks. If you want dressier shoes in your photographs, you can always bring them and change once we reach our spot.

Long dresses can look gorgeous when they catch the breeze near the water, but make sure yours allows you to walk comfortably. For children, choose clothing that lets them move, climb, cuddle, and play without needing constant adjustments.

Planning for the Lake Pleasant Terrain

Lake Pleasant is beautiful, but it is still an outdoor desert location. Bring water, wear comfortable shoes, and be prepared for uneven and sometimes steep terrain. Young children will need close supervision around the rocks and shoreline.
