One of the biggest questions I get from parents and seniors is, “When should we schedule senior portraits?”
The short answer? Earlier than you probably think.
Between Arizona’s summer heat, yearbook deadlines, sports, vacations, and college applications, senior year fills up fast. Planning your senior portrait session early gives you the most flexibility, the best weather, and plenty of time to enjoy your photos without feeling rushed.
Here’s what I recommend after photographing seniors all over the Phoenix area.
Think About Arizona’s Weather
Let’s be honest. Phoenix summers are hot.
While we can absolutely make beautiful portraits during the summer, the timing of your session becomes much more important.
Early morning and just before sunset are my favorite times because temperatures are lower and the light is soft, warm, and incredibly flattering.
If you’re dreaming of green forests, wildflowers, or mountain scenery, summer is actually a great excuse to head north.
I often offer discounted or waived travel fees for locations like Prescott or Flagstaff during the hottest months because everyone gets a break from the Phoenix heat, and you end up with completely different scenery.
The Best Seasons for Senior Portraits
Every season offers something different.
Spring brings fresh greenery and colorful blooms.
Summer works well if we head north or shoot around sunrise or sunset.
Fall is one of the busiest times because temperatures finally cool down and many seniors want photos before graduation activities begin.
Winter in Arizona is another hidden gem. Comfortable weather and beautiful golden light make it an excellent time for portraits.
There really isn’t a wrong season. The best season is the one that works with your schedule while giving you enough time before any important deadlines.
Don’t Forget About Yearbook Deadlines
This is probably the biggest reason I encourage families to book early.
Every high school has its own deadline for submitting senior portraits to the yearbook. Around Phoenix, many schools require submissions surprisingly early, often before the end of the first semester.
If you wait too long, you may miss the deadline entirely.
That means your senior portrait won’t appear in the yearbook, and nobody wants that surprise.
My Recommendation
I usually recommend scheduling your senior portraits at least a month before your school’s deadline.
That gives plenty of time for:
- Your portrait session
- Professional editing
- Viewing your gallery
- Choosing your favorite image
- Delivering your yearbook file without unnecessary stress
The earlier you schedule, the more choices you’ll have for dates and locations.
Keep Your Photographer in the Loop
One thing I always ask new seniors is:
“When is your yearbook deadline?”
Knowing that date helps me make sure everything stays on schedule.
I pride myself on a fast turnaround time, but during the busiest part of senior season my calendar fills quickly. If you’re booking close to your deadline, I also offer rush editing as an add-on so you can still meet your school’s requirements.
My Favorite Time to Photograph Seniors
Personally, I love photographing seniors in late spring and early fall.
The weather is comfortable, schedules tend to be a little more flexible, and we have lots of beautiful location options around Phoenix and even up north if you want something completely different.
The biggest piece of advice I can give is simple:
Don’t wait until everyone else is trying to book.
Planning ahead means less stress, more location choices, and portraits you’ll be excited to show off all year long.
