Let’s talk about something I get asked all the time….
“When’s the best time of year to do family photos in Phoenix?”
Okay, first things first… I know, I know… people always say Arizona doesn’t have seasons. But here’s the truth: I’m out in the desert almost every day with my camera. And let me tell you, there are seasons here… they just look a little different. And you have to look a little bit harder. The smallest things are a little bit more meaningful here living in the brown desert. From the deep greens that pop after a monsoon season to the golden grasses in late fall to wildflowers bursting open in spring. The desert changes. And it’s actually kind of amazing to watch it all unfold. It’s something I don’t take for granted living here.
So let’s walk through what it really looks like season by season and you can decide what’s right for your crew.
Fall (October–December)
This is hands-down the most popular time for family photos. The weather finally cools off, we get that dreamy golden light, and everyone’s thinking about holiday cards. I love this time of year for the cozy outfits, neutral tones, and the natural warm glow that makes skin tones look so dang good.
But heads up…it’s also my busiest time. So if you’re dreaming of fall, it’s best to snag your spot early…. like early-early. My fall starts booking in at the beginning of the year sometimes. So mark my words, get on my calendar super early if you want the fall.
Fall is also a popular time for certain looks you may want, like our local Arizona farms letting us rock sessions in their sunflower fields or cotton fields (middle to late October). So if you are looking for that type of session, this is also when that happens.
Winter (January–February)
Winter in Phoenix is seriously underrated for family photos. The weather is mild (we’re talking jeans and a cute sweater, not parkas), and the scenery still has that warm desert glow. But one of the best parts? It’s right after the holiday rush.
No more scrambling to get cards out, no packed schedules with parties, school events, or gift shopping. It’s quieter. It’s more relaxed. Families often tell me they actually enjoy their sessions more during this time…less pressure, and more time to just be present.
It’s a great time if you’re not necessarily looking for holiday photos but want to capture the season of life you’re in, especially with younger kids who’ve just been gifted those cute new outfits from grandma. Just keep in mind: while it may feel like a breather, it’s also when my senior and grad season starts ramping up, so my calendar does fill quickly. If winter sounds like your vibe, reach out early to snag a spot.
Spring (March–May)
Spring in Phoenix brings a whole new kind of beauty. The desert softens, blooms pop up in unexpected places, and the light feels fresh and full of promise. If the conditions line up just right, we’ll see a wildflower season, which makes for vibrant, colorful images.
This is also the time when local Phoenix west valley farmers open their land to us. I get to photograph in broccoli fields filled with sunny yellow flowers in early spring, and golden wheat fields glowing by the end of May. These spots are true hidden gems that give your session a unique look beyond the traditional desert vibe.
Spring fills quickly with families wanting updated portraits before the school year ends and senior grads trying to sneak in their final sessions. My calendar also fills up fast this time of year! So it’s good to get to it early.
Summer (June–September)
Now, I know what you’re thinking… Candace, are you really suggesting photos in the Arizona summer?
Yes. Yes I am. But hear me out….
We shoot an hour before sunset, when the light is golden and the temps have dropped just enough to be bearable. Summer sunsets? They’re actually kind of magical. And here’s the thing, summer is my slow season, which means quicker turnaround times for you. Less waiting. More flexibility. And bonus… I’m usually running fun little perks or deals for families who brave the heat.
You just might be surprised how doable it really is. Bring water, maybe a little portable fan for the car, and let’s make some magic out of monsoon season.
So… When’s the Best Time?
Honestly? It’s whatever season feels right for your family. Think about your kids’ schedules, your ideal wardrobe, your timeline for needing photos, and even your energy level. Each season brings its own look and feel and I’ll help guide you no matter what you choose.
