As a Phoenix high school senior photographer, I photograph a lot of amazing seniors every year. Every once in a while someone brings something along to their session that really tells their story, and for Charlie, that story rolled in on four wheels.
Charlie’s senior session out in the Arizona desert was one that felt easy from the very beginning. I meet seniors with all kinds of personalities and interests, and I always love seeing what each one brings that reflects who they are. Charlie definitely knew exactly who he was.
Charlie attends Paradise Honors High School in Surprise, Arizona and when he pulled up for his session out in the desert, the first thing I noticed was that he looked completely comfortable in what he was wearing. Jeans, a simple t-shirt, and a ball cap. Nothing overly styled or forced. It was clearly just Charlie being Charlie, and honestly that is always the best thing a senior can bring to their photos.
Being comfortable and true to who you are really matters in photos. When someone shows up feeling like themselves, the whole session just flows better. That was exactly the case here. Charlie was relaxed from the start, and you could tell he wasn’t trying to be anyone else.
Of course, one of the biggest parts of his session was the vehicle he brought along. Charlie arrived with his 1972 Chevrolet K-20 truck, and it quickly became a big part of the story we captured that day. The moment I saw it, it actually reminded me of a truck my dad used to drive when I was younger, back when I was in junior high school in Tennessee. There is something about those old trucks that instantly brings back memories. And they definitely came flooding back to me that day.
This one was especially cool because Charlie clearly took great care of it. It was equipped with a manual transmission, which I have to admit made me smile a little since you don’t see a lot of high school seniors driving those these days. But it suited him perfectly. The truck wasn’t just a prop for photos. It was something he genuinely loved, and that’s exactly the kind of thing that makes senior sessions personal.
Naturally, a big part of Charlie’s Phoenix senior photos centered around the truck. The country desert outside Phoenix was the perfect setting for it. Open desert, dusty roads, big sky, and that classic Chevy parked right where it looked like it belonged.
But the truck wasn’t the only important thing Charlie wanted to include.
He also brought along his dog, Charlotte.
I’m always happy when seniors want to include their dogs in their Phoenix senior photography session, and Charlotte was such a sweet addition. Some of my favorite moments were just the simple ones with the two of them together. No big posing, just Charlie hanging out with his dog with that old Chevy nearby.
As the session went on, we talked a little about what was next for him after graduation. His mom hung back most of the time, letting him enjoy the session, and during our conversation Charlie shared that he’s hoping to head to trade school in Wyoming. He talked about it in a way that made it clear he already feels like he belongs there.
I remember thinking how refreshing it was to hear someone his age speak so confidently about what he wants. This kid knew who he was. He knew what he wanted to do. And he stayed completely authentic the whole time he was in front of the camera.
That authenticity honestly made the entire session so easy.
Charlie was just a genuinely good kid all around, the kind you immediately root for. When seniors show up comfortable in their boots and jeans, bring the things they love, talk about their future with excitement, and just stay true to themselves, it makes my job as a Phoenix high school senior photographer pretty special.
Between a classic 1972 Chevy truck, his dog Charlotte, and a senior who knew exactly who he was, this session was one I won’t forget anytime soon.
