Tucked away in the Roosevelt Historic District in Downtown Phoenix is one of my favorite little hidden gems, The Teapot. It’s intimate, full of character, and always feels like you’ve stumbled into something special.
This wedding was even more meaningful to me because it came through Jonathan, the owner of The Teapot. I’ve photographed there several times, and every time he refers me to one of his couples, it honestly means so much. There’s a level of trust there that I never take lightly. He knows I’m going to take care of his people, and that matters.
Shaun and Bethany’s story doesn’t start in Arizona though… it starts all the way in Japan.
The two of them met in 2023 while teaching English abroad. After a work event, they became completely inseparable, but there was this underlying reality they couldn’t ignore. Bethany is from the U.S., and Shaun is from the U.K. They had one year before their contracts ended and life would send them back to opposite sides of the world.
So they did something really beautiful and honestly, kind of brave.
They chose each other anyway.
Before Bethany had to return home, the two of them eloped in Japan on April 18, 2024. It wasn’t the big celebration most people picture. There wasn’t a ceremony filled with family or a dance floor or all the little details, but it was intentional. It was them deciding, “we’re doing this, no matter what it takes.”
Their wedding at The Teapot was the celebration they didn’t get the first time.
And you could feel that.
There was this quiet depth to the day—like every moment mattered just a little bit more. Not rushed, not overdone… just meaningful.
They planned their wedding to fall on their two-year anniversary, which already makes it special. But what made it even more emotional was the hope tied into it—that by this time, Shaun’s visa would be approved and they would finally be living in the same country, building their life together without distance in the way.
That kind of love hits different.
When they’re not navigating international timelines and paperwork, they’re actually really simple in the best way. They love watching movies and reality TV together (Bethany joked they could’ve been on 90 Day Fiancé, which honestly made me laugh), cooking meals side by side, hiking, traveling, and just being together.
And that’s exactly what their wedding felt like too.
Not about putting on a show, just about finally getting to celebrate something they’ve already fought really hard for.
Shaun and Bethany, it was such an honor to be the one to capture this chapter for you. Your story is one of patience, commitment, and choosing each other over and over again, even when it wasn’t easy.
And those are always my favorite kinds of love stories to document.
