When most people think about booking a professional photography session, they usually think of family portraits, senior photos, engagements, maternity sessions, or weddings.
But what if you didn’t need a traditional milestone to celebrate?
What if the milestone was simply you?
Recently, I had the privilege of photographing two incredible women who traveled from New York to Phoenix, Arizona for a girls’ getaway and a birthday celebration. Best friends for more than 15 years, they decided to do something many women talk about but rarely give themselves permission to actually do.
They booked a photoshoot.
Not because they were getting married.
Not because they needed updated headshots.
Not because someone told them they should.
They booked a session simply to celebrate friendship, confidence, growth, and a milestone birthday.
These two women have shared 15 years of friendship.
Think about that for a moment.
Fifteen years of life together.
Fifteen years of celebrating victories, supporting each other through challenges, growing into the women they are today, and creating memories that span more than a decade.
That kind of friendship deserves to be documented.
We often hire photographers to capture our families and our children, but some of the most meaningful relationships in our lives are our friendships.
The women who answer our phone calls.
The women who encourage us when we’re doubting ourselves.
The women who celebrate our successes and sit beside us during difficult seasons.
These relationships matter.
Yet very few women ever think about scheduling professional photographs together.
This session was proof that they should.
Some birthdays feel different.
Turning 40 is one of them.
For many women, it becomes a season of reflection. You look back on everything you’ve experienced and everything you’ve overcome. You recognize how much you’ve grown. You begin caring less about meeting expectations and more about living authentically.
There is something incredibly powerful about entering a new decade with confidence.
Not confidence because life has been perfect.
Confidence because you’ve lived.
You’ve learned.
You’ve survived difficult seasons.
You’ve discovered who you are.
And you’ve earned every part of the woman you’ve become.
For their Phoenix empowerment session, we chose Papago Park, one of the most iconic photography locations in Arizona.
The desert landscape created the perfect contrast against their elegant dresses and sophisticated styling.
Some images felt straight out of a fashion magazine.
The dramatic desert scenery, flowing fabrics, and confident poses created portraits that were timeless, elegant, and powerful.
But what I loved most weren’t necessarily the posed images.
It was everything that happened in between.
The laughter.
The dancing.
The spontaneous moments.
The way they encouraged each other.
The way they celebrated each other.
At one point they danced together on the rocks overlooking the desert landscape.
Later they skipped down the road in their dresses, completely carefree and completely present in the moment.
If you’ve ever thought about booking a Phoenix women’s empowerment session, consider this your sign.
Gather your best friend.
Pack the dress you’ve been saving for a special occasion.
Book the trip.
Celebrate the birthday.
Or celebrate absolutely nothing at all.
Because the truth is, you don’t need a reason to be photographed.
You don’t need permission to celebrate yourself.
And you don’t need to wait until everything feels perfect.
Sometimes the most meaningful photographs happen when women simply decide they’re worth remembering.
And that’s exactly what these two friends did.
