When Arianna told me she wanted green scenery for her senior photos, I knew we needed to look beyond the usual Phoenix desert backdrop. We headed to Hassayampa River Preserve near Wickenburg, Arizona, for a two-hour Senior VIP Tour with shady paths, trees, water, and plenty of room to make the session feel like her.
Arianna has only lived in the Phoenix area for two years. She attends Arizona School for the Arts, is involved in several school clubs, and is a competitive dancer. Now she’s applying to colleges, with New York high on her list of places she’d love to go. Getting to hear about her plans while we wandered between photo spots was one of my favorite parts of the morning.
A greener setting for senior photos near Phoenix
If you’re picturing nothing but cacti when you think of senior photos in Arizona, Arianna’s session might change your mind. Hassayampa River Preserve gave us leafy trails, a little bridge over the water, and pockets of soft light beneath the trees. It was just the setting she had in mind: green, peaceful, and still full of variety.
I usually plan sessions here in the morning. The preserve’s hours and trail closing times vary by season, and an afternoon session can run up against closing time. I check the current preserve hours while planning so we have time to explore and change outfits without rushing.
Three outfits, three sides of Arianna
We started with her black top, white layer, and jeans. It was an easy, stylish look for the wooded paths. Some of my favorite portraits from this part of the session are simply Arianna smiling among the trees.
Her next outfit was a flowing cream dress, and the location gave it a whole different feel. We photographed her by the water and along the little bridge, then made time for portraits among the greenery. She even brought her ballet shoes. Since dance is such a big part of her life, I loved being able to include that detail without making every photo a formal dance portrait.
For the last look, she changed into a white lace dress with a belt and boots. We moved back into the trees, and this is where the session became especially playful. She walked, spun, laughed, and let the dress and her hair move. Those photos show so much of her personality alongside the quieter portraits we made earlier in the morning.
What a Senior VIP Tour makes possible
Two hours gave Arianna time for three outfits and several settings within the preserve. We could make close portraits, wide photos that show off the location, a few images celebrating dance, and the fun, moving photos that happened as we went along. Together, they show more than one side of her, which is exactly what I want from a senior gallery.
I’m so glad Arianna chose a place that felt right to her. Between her gorgeous style, her easy smile, and hearing about everything she hopes to do next, she was an absolute joy to photograph. New York may be calling, but I’m glad we got to tell a little piece of her story here in Arizona first.
