Sedona Elopement Photos

Tayrn + Darin

Bride and groom holding hands beneath colorful evening clouds at a Sedona overlook

My niece came all the way from Tennessee to Arizona to visit family and have her Sedona elopement photos taken. Getting to photograph her in a wedding dress, with those red rocks behind her, made this session especially meaningful to me.

Getting everyone out the door on time? Apparently, that was the real challenge.

We arrived at our location around 5:40 p.m. Sunset was at 6:00. And we still had a little hiking and an outfit change ahead of us.

So yes, we were absolutely racing the light.

From Tennessee to the Red Rocks of Sedona

I absolutely love sharing Arizona with family who live out of state. For this visit, we got to add wedding attire, a bouquet, and a red rock backdrop to the family memories.

Her lace dress and flowing veil looked beautiful against the landscape, and his burgundy suit fit right in with the warm desert colors. With the cliffs, the clouds, and the two of them together, there was so much to work with.

And then there was a rainbow. Because apparently Sedona decided we needed a little extra magic that evening.

A Changing Tent and a Race Against Sunset

I brought my portable changing tent so they could get dressed once we had hiked up a little. It is a handy thing to have for outdoor sessions, although setting it up and changing into wedding clothes still takes time. Especially when the sun is already making its exit.

By the time everyone was ready, our window of light was very short.

I had to work quickly, choosing angles and guiding them through poses while the light changed around us. We made room for the wide portraits that showed off Sedona, the closer moments together, and that beautiful veil.

The cliffs were glowing gold in the early photos. As the sun dropped, the clouds and red rocks took on a deeper evening mood. Looking through the gallery, you can see that transition, and I love that the photos tell that part of the story too.

Sedona Elopement Photos From Sunset Into Dusk

We kept photographing all the way to dark. I normally work with natural light, but I brought flash into this session to keep photographing them as the daylight faded.

That gave us a different feel for the last portraits, with the two of them lit against the darkening Sedona landscape. The evening gave us soft moments, dramatic skies, and a few final photos that feel like a fitting end to the adventure.

We also took family photos, captured the rings, and made time for a little fun. The girls doing cartwheels in their dresses definitely deserve a place in the story. Those are the kinds of moments that make a gallery feel like the people in it.

Phone Flashlights and Family Dinner

Eventually, we really did run out of light. We walked back to the car using our phone flashlights, still carrying everything we had brought up with us.

A hike, a changing tent, wedding clothes, a rainbow, and a walk back in the dark. We packed quite a bit into that evening.

Then we ended the night with family dinner. After all the rushing and photographing, it was so nice to sit down together. I got to spend the evening being both the photographer and the aunt, and that made these photos even more special.

Planning Your Own Sedona Photo Adventure

If you are dreaming of Sedona elopement photos, give yourself time for the whole experience: getting to the location, walking to your photo spot, changing clothes, and getting settled before sunset.

We made our short window work, but I would happily take a little more breathing room next time. Family, if you are reading this, that means leaving the house earlier.

Whether you live in Arizona or are visiting from out of state, I would love to photograph your own adventure in the red rocks. Reach out to Memories by Candace, and let’s talk about the photos you have in mind.
