Some surprise proposals come with a little extra suspense for the photographer. Bryce and Rebecca’s surprise proposal and engagement photos at The Farm at South Mountain in Phoenix had me watching the forecast, protecting a picnic setup with a clear umbrella, and wondering whether I would be photographing the entire session in the rain.
And then, right as they arrived, the weather cleared.
Apparently, the sunshine was waiting for its cue.
A Surprise Proposal with Plenty of Thought Behind It
Bryce put so much thought and planning into asking Rebecca to marry him. We had been talking leading up to the session, working through the details of his surprise proposal and how everything would come together at The Farm at South Mountain.
These two are both from the Phoenix area, but their story goes back much further than this afternoon. They met a long, long time ago at summer camp. Now, years after that first meeting, I got to photograph the moment their story became an engagement.
That is one of my favorite things about photographing proposals. I get a little glimpse into everything that brought a couple to this point, and then I get to be there when the next chapter begins. Usually while trying very hard to remain unnoticed.
On this particular day, my hiding strategy involved an umbrella.
Rain, Umbrellas, and a Very Well-Timed Break in the Weather
The weekend forecast had been giving us plenty to think about. With a tropical storm in the Pacific and rain moving through Phoenix, I wasn’t sure what conditions would look like when it was time for Bryce’s proposal.
Bryce and I stayed in touch, and we decided to let the show go on, even if there was rain.
When I arrived at The Farm, it was raining. The weather had also left the property unusually quiet, so we had an empty setting for the surprise. I brought an umbrella for myself and placed a clear umbrella over their picnic-style proposal setup to help protect it until they arrived.
There I was, ready with my camera, literally hiding behind an umbrella and hoping everything would come together.
Then Bryce and Rebecca arrived, and the weather cleared almost instantly. Suddenly, I didn’t have to worry about the rain or wind. After all that forecast watching and preparing, we could simply enjoy what was happening in front of us.
Funny how that happens sometimes.
A Picnic-Style Surprise Proposal Setup
For couples who want something special waiting at their proposal location, I offer a picnic-style surprise proposal setup through Memories by Candace. It includes a blanket area, basket, champagne, and glasses, creating a sweet place to pause and celebrate after the question has been asked.

For Bryce and Rebecca, the setup became part of the story throughout their session. It was waiting for the proposal, and later they returned to the blanket to sit together, enjoy their champagne, and take in the fact that they were now engaged.
I love having room for those quieter moments after a proposal. There is so much anticipation leading up to the question, followed by all the excitement of the answer. A few minutes together gives the couple a chance to breathe, laugh, admire the ring, and let it all sink in.
Of course, a champagne celebration also makes for some very fun photographs.
