If you’re planning your ASU graduation photos, first of all… congratulations! You made it through the late-night study sessions, group projects, exams, and probably more coffee than you’d like to admit.
Graduation is a huge milestone, and your photos should celebrate everything you’ve accomplished.
After photographing many ASU graduates over the years, I’ve learned that a little planning goes a long way. Arizona State University is one of my favorite places to photograph graduates, but it’s also one of the busiest during graduation season. Knowing what to expect before your session will help you relax, enjoy the experience, and walk away with images you’ll love.
When to Book Your ASU Graduation Photos
ASU graduation photos fill up quickly every spring, so booking your session early is one of the best things you can do.
The timing of your session matters just as much as booking early.
Graduation photo season typically runs from early April through May. If your schedule allows, consider booking during the first part of April or toward the end of May. Those dates tend to be a little less hectic than the busiest weeks leading up to commencement.
If your schedule only allows for a session during peak season, don’t worry. We simply plan ahead, allow a little extra time, and make the most of it.
Expect Crowds at the Most Popular Locations
Some campus landmarks are popular for a reason.
Locations like Old Main,the main fountain, and the palm walk are some of the most requested spots for ASU graduation photos. They’re beautiful, iconic, and instantly recognizable.
They’re also where everyone else wants photos.
It’s completely normal to wait a few minutes for your turn, especially during April and early May. While we’re waiting, I like to photograph in nearby areas so we’re always making progress instead of standing in line.
A little patience goes a long way, and I promise the photos are worth it.
Don’t Miss the Old Main Graduation Sign
The large graduation sign on Old Main Lawn has become one of the most requested photo spots on campus each year.
It usually appears in early April and stays through late May, making it one of the busiest locations during graduation season.
If this photo is on your must-have list, I recommend booking your session as early as possible or scheduling toward the end of the season when crowds begin to slow down a bit.
Consider Another ASU Campus
Here’s a tip many graduates don’t think about.
If you love the idea of ASU graduation photos but would rather avoid the largest crowds, consider another ASU campus.
Some of my favorites include:
- ASU West Valley Campus
- ASU Downtown Phoenix Campus
You’ll still have beautiful ASU architecture and plenty of school spirit, but with significantly fewer people around. That gives us more freedom to move around, more flexibility with locations, and a much more relaxed experience.
Sunrise Sessions Are Worth It
I’ll admit it… I’m not naturally a morning person.
But sunrise sessions at ASU are absolutely worth setting the alarm.
The campus is quieter, temperatures are cooler, parking is easier, and we can photograph many of the popular locations before they become crowded. The soft morning light is also incredibly flattering and gives your photos a beautiful, timeless look.
If you can convince yourself to wake up early just once, your future self will thank you.
Be Ready to Explore Campus
One of my favorite parts of photographing ASU graduation photos is exploring campus together.
We’ll move between several locations throughout your session, following the best light while avoiding heavier traffic whenever possible. This creates more variety in your gallery and helps every part of campus feel unique.
Sometimes my favorite images aren’t even the ones we originally planned. They’re the ones we discover along the way.
A Few Small Things That Make a Big Difference
Since I’ve photographed quite a few graduation sessions at ASU, here are a few simple tips that can make your day even smoother:
Wear comfortable shoes while walking between locations and change into dress shoes once we arrive.
Bring your graduation cap and gown neatly steamed before your session.
If you’re bringing family members or friends for a few photos, let me know ahead of time so we can build that into the timeline.
And don’t stress if campus feels busy. I know the areas that photograph beautifully, even when there are lots of people around.
Your Graduation Session Should Feel Fun
Yes, graduation season is busy.
Yes, there will probably be other graduates celebrating right alongside you.
But that doesn’t mean your session has to feel stressful.
My job isn’t just taking pictures. It’s helping you feel comfortable, guiding you every step of the way, and creating an experience that’s just as memorable as the photos themselves.
