As a Phoenix family photographer, some of my favorite sessions take place in the vast, rugged beauty of the Arizona desert. There’s something truly magical about capturing a family against that natural, sun-drenched backdrop—especially when they’re only here for a short time. Recently, I had the pleasure of photographing a family who’s spending just one year in Arizona for dad’s job, and they wanted to make the most of their time here by creating memories with a family photoshoot in Phoenix, AZ. Since they’re originally from Missouri, these photos have an extra layer of significance: they’ll be a beautiful memento of their time in the desert before they return home.
The Perfect Fall Colors for a Desert Photoshoot
One of the things I absolutely loved about this session was their wardrobe. The family chose the perfect fall colors for a desert backdrop, giving the photos a warm, seasonal feel with a bit of a twist. Burnt orange has to be one of my favorite colors to shoot in the desert—it pops beautifully against the muted greens of cacti and the sandy tones of the landscape. Every member of the family wore colors that brought out the beauty of their surroundings, adding a cozy, autumnal vibe that felt right at home in the Arizona wilderness.
A Family Moment Five Years in the Making
Not only were these desert photos special for their Arizona memories, but they were also the family’s first set of professional photos in five years. With four kids ages 14, 9, 6, and 3, it was the first time the youngest joined in for family photos! There was something so heartwarming about capturing the siblings together, seeing how they connected and brought out the best in each other in front of the camera. I could tell they were savoring this rare opportunity to slow down and celebrate their family as it is right now—capturing the sweet, silly, and authentic moments that come from being together.
Balancing Posed and Candid Moments
For this session, we took a balanced approach, getting a mix of posed and candid shots. Posed photos are wonderful for those classic, timeless portraits, but candid moments bring out the true essence of a family. Some of my favorite shots were the ones where the kids just played, laughed, and showed their unique personalities. The younger kids had such a blast exploring the desert, while the older siblings brought their own energy and warmth, making every moment feel natural and relaxed.
Taking Arizona Home with Them
The desert scenery made this shoot feel uniquely “Arizona.” This family will leave with memories of breathtaking desert sunsets, towering saguaro cacti, and golden light filtering through the landscape. I love knowing that these images will be with them long after they leave Arizona—a tangible reminder of their time here in Phoenix, surrounded by the beauty of the Southwest.
