photo of two dads with son holding baby ultrasound - paternity pregnancy announcement

As a photographer, each story I capture holds a unique essence, a narrative that sometimes challenges traditional categorizations on my website. I faced such a delightful quandary recently, one that had me pondering the appropriate place for it under the sections of my portfolio. Typically, maternity sessions are associated with mothers, stemming from the word “maternal.” However, the beautiful story I wanted to share was about two fathers announcing they were expecting their second child.

Reflecting on this, I realized that paternal joy—the excitement of fatherhood—deserves its space, as it's an equally significant storytelling experience.

I decided this story fit perfectly into its own distinct category because it highlights the universal joy and anticipation that comes with expecting a new child, regardless of whether it is maternal or paternal in nature. This decision allows me to celebrate and showcase all forms of family beginnings on my website.

These two dads are about to embark on the exciting journey of becoming “girl dads.” The transition from raising a boy to welcoming a girl into their lives promises a fresh adventure, one that I’m thrilled they chose me to document. Joshua reached out to me about capturing this significant moment during their upcoming trip from Virginia. They planned to have their announcement photos taken amidst the stunning backdrop of the Arizona desert. The idea of photographing them in such a picturesque setting, as they celebrate the impending arrival of their new daughter and prepare their son to be a big brother, truly excited me.

Their story is a beautiful reminder of the evolving nature of family and the boundless forms of love that enrich our lives. It’s these narratives that make my job as a photographer so profoundly rewarding, allowing me to not only capture, but also to participate in the milestone moments of people’s lives, regardless of the traditional categories these stories might initially seem to fit into.
