Maternity Photography Guide: Capturing Memories

H E L L O

& congratulations

Congratulations on your growing family!  Hopefully you will find a few things helpful in this handy dandy maternity photography guide I’ve made for you to help prepare you for your photo session.

In the midst of life’s hustle and bustle, we often overlook the amazing feats our bodies achieve every day.

Scheduling maternity photoshoots is a beautiful way to cherish the extraordinary journey of pregnancy. And I’m so glad you have done that!

Despite the challenges like fatigue, backaches, and nausea, your body is creating a new life. It’s a journey worth celebrating!

As your dedicated maternity photographer in Phoenix, I’m here to capture these precious moments with care and creativity.

WHEN TO BOOK

A common question I often receive is, “When is the best time to book maternity photos?” It’s an important decision because most expecting parents prefer not to book multiple maternity sessions during the same pregnancy. However, the answer isn’t always straightforward—it varies for each person.

As a rule of thumb, scheduling your maternity session between 28 and 34 weeks of pregnancy is typically ideal. This timeframe allows your belly to have a beautiful round shape while ensuring you’re still comfortable for posing. However, babies have their own schedules, so if you’re expecting twins or anticipate an early arrival, it’s best to plan your session earlier, around 24-28 weeks.

If this isn’t your first pregnancy, you may show earlier, giving you the opportunity to book your session sooner. Booking earlier not only provides peace of mind but also offers more flexibility in choosing poses and locations that align with your vision and style.

As your dedicated maternity photographer in Phoenix, I’m here to make sure your experience is tailored to your preferences and stress-free. If, after reading this, you feel you booked too early or too late, please reach out. We can always adjust to find the perfect timing that best captures your pregnancy journey.

WHAT TO

Expect

Feeling a little nervous about your maternity photoshoot? That’s completely normal. Many of us feel a bit awkward in front of the camera at first!

During your session, don’t stress if you’re unsure of what to do. It’s my job to guide you, ensuring you feel comfortable and confident. While many people are used to smiling directly at the camera, I often suggest different poses—gazing down at your belly, looking up at the sky, or simply being in the moment.

I’m sure you have plenty of photos on your phone where you’re smiling at the camera—I want your maternity session to capture something unique and genuine.

Some of the most authentic moments arise when you’re engrossed in your surroundings—whether you’re sharing a laugh with your partner, chatting with your little one inside, or picking wildflowers. I’ll prompt you when it’s time to look at the camera, but until then, feel free to be yourself and enjoy the experience.

HOW TO

Prepare

The experience of a maternity photoshoot can vary greatly depending on how your pregnancy is unfolding—it can be empowering, exhausting, or a mix of both. Rest assured, I’m confident in my ability to capture beautiful photographs whether we’re shooting in the comfort of your home or amidst the serene backdrop of Lake Pleasant.

However, your comfort and well-being are my top priorities. I never want to push you beyond your physical limits. It’s important to me that you feel relaxed and able to fully enjoy the session, focusing on preserving this incredibly special time in your life.

As a precautionary measure, it’s advisable to consult with your doctor before scheduling your maternity photoshoot. They can provide guidance on how much physical activity is suitable, allowing us to plan the session accordingly.

The day before our session, it’s helpful to pack a few essentials to ensure your comfort and readiness:

  • Extra Clothes: Include layers or a change of outfit to accommodate weather changes or to achieve different looks during the shoot.
  • Snacks and Water: Keep energized and hydrated throughout the session.
  • Hairbrush and Extra Makeup: Touch-ups for maintaining a fresh appearance.
  • Comfy Shoes: Opt for comfortable footwear for walking, with an option for shoes you’d like to be photographed in.

These preparations ensure you’re prepared for a seamless and enjoyable maternity photography experience. If you have any specific preferences or additional items in mind, feel free to pack those as well.

What to Wear

To dress or not to dress… that’s always the question when it comes to maternity shoots.

Maternity photography can showcase stunning nude and raw images that beautifully highlight your expectant curves and blossoming belly. However, your preference and who will view the images are important considerations.

If you prefer to keep your clothes on, here are some outfit recommendations that photograph well:

  • Maxi Dresses: Elegant and comfortable, they emphasize your silhouette.
  • Dresses with High Waistlines or Slits: Opt for fabrics like lace or sheer material for added texture and visual interest.
  • Long Flowy Skirts with Crop Tops or Bandeau Bras: Create a soft, romantic look.
  • Cozy Knit Pieces: Comfortable and flattering, perfect for a relaxed vibe.

The key is to wear something that makes you feel comfortable and confident. Choose outfits that you’ve worn before to avoid discomfort during the session.

We want you to focus on being yourself in front of the camera, not worrying about minor distractions like itchy tags or awkward shirt fits.

Wear something that’ll keep you cool in summer, warm in winter, and that’ll make you feel like the stunning mama that you are. Bring a couple outfits so that we can play with different options and combinations.

Be careful with prints, logos, and bright colors as sometimes these detract from the most important parts of the photograph – you!

Once we pick a location together, we can discuss color palettes that will help you stand out beautifully against your environment.

If you’re leaning towards your birthday suit or showing that belly quite a bit, I’d advise you to moisturize your belly and stay tuned into your comfort levels.

Also, keep in mind if you are wearing a tight to belly dress that hugs that belly, you may want to go without undergarments as sometimes they can squeeze in and show rolls more or even the under garment lines can be seen in your portraits.

Here’s what I promise you:

  • You can change your mind at any point.

  • I will continuously check in with you to make sure you’re still comfortable.

  • I will listen. Please feel free to let me know about the borders of your personal space.

CHOOSING LOCATION

Let’s keep things simple and convenient for your maternity photoshoot. It’s essential to choose a location with easy access to a bathroom, minimal walking distance from the parking lot, and no extensive hiking required.

I understand that selecting a location can feel daunting with so many beautiful options available. However, I’m passionate about capturing images that hold special significance for you. This could be your own home, backyard, a Phoenix downtown museum, the lake, or your favorite park—wherever you feel most comfortable and at peace.

If you’re unsure or need suggestions, I have a wealth of picturesque locations in mind that you’re sure to adore.

Let's Discuss

BRINGING THE

Family

Including your loved ones in your maternity photoshoot can create incredibly special moments. Seeing the connection between yourself, your unborn child, your partner, and any soon-to-be older siblings in the photographs can be truly heartwarming.

Getting everyone on board can sometimes be a challenge. Younger children often embrace the opportunity to be playful and silly during the session, resulting in joyful and authentic moments captured on camera. Encouraging them to see the session as a fun game can help bring out their natural smiles and expressions.

If your partner is hesitant about participating, reassure them that it’s normal to feel less enthusiastic about being photographed. Remind them of the cherished memories the photos will capture, making the experience worthwhile.

Moreover, assure them that the photoshoot will be enjoyable and relaxed. I prioritize capturing moments naturally, ensuring no one feels pressured to pose unnaturally or smile constantly at the camera.

HAIR,

Nails,

& Make-Up

If you’re not one of the lucky ones blessed with that pregnancy glow—or even if you are and just want to indulge a bit—I highly recommend considering makeup for your maternity photoshoot. Whether you prefer doing it yourself or treating yourself to a professional, it’s a wonderful way to feel pampered and enhance your natural radiance.

And while you’re at it, why not treat yourself to a subtle manicure? During the session, I’ll guide you to frame your belly with your hands at times, and I want you to feel completely confident and comfortable. Being self-conscious about flaky nail polish or chipped nails is the last thing I want you to worry about.

When it comes to hair for your maternity photoshoot, I adore the way a flowing mane catches the breeze. If you’re considering a salon visit, opt for leaving your hair down rather than an up-do. Loose locks add movement, romance, and a touch of natural imperfection that beautifully enhances your photos.

Remember, the essence of our session is to capture you as you naturally are. The goal is for you to feel and look like yourself, with all your unique beauty shining through.
