When Derrick reached out about capturing their surprise proposal, I couldn’t help but suggest Papago Park. This couple was visiting from Missouri, I was beyond excited to welcome them to the heart of the Arizona desert. They were here soaking up the stunning scenery, and I had the honor of helping them preserve a piece of that magic forever, for their save the dates and for their story.
We met at Papago Park, a breathtaking desert location that made the perfect backdrop for their surprise proposal and one of my absolute favorite desert locations in Phoenix. Alison thought it was just a simple photo shoot, completely unaware that we were about to jump right into the surprise proposal.
The summer heat often keeps people away, but honestly? That’s one of the reasons I love shooting then. There is this peaceful stillness in the air, no crowds, no distractions, just wide open spaces, golden rock formations, and that iconic Arizona sunset painting the sky.
Derrick and Alison were such a joy to photograph. Playful, sweet, and completely themselves, which made the photos feel so real. We took our time exploring, letting the light guide us, with plenty of moments to pause and soak it all in. That is one of the things I adore about summer sessions…everything feels slower, softer, and more intentional.
There is something timeless about photographing love in the desert. It’s raw, it’s romantic, and when that golden light hits just right, wow. Derrick and Alison fit into the landscape so effortlessly, it was like the desert had been waiting just for them.
Derrick and Alison, thank you for trusting me to capture such a meaningful part of your story. I hope every time you look back at these photos, you’re reminded not only of your time in Arizona but also of how it felt… quiet, connected, and completely yours.
