There is something so special about photographing a couple as they prepare to welcome their little one into the world. This beautiful maternity session at Papago Park in Phoenix, Arizona was filled with warm desert light, genuine connection, and one of those sunsets that reminds me why I never get tired of photographing in the Arizona desert.
Papago Park continues to be one of my favorite locations for Phoenix maternity photos because it offers everything I love in a session. The iconic red buttes, desert landscape, soft golden grasses, and incredible Arizona sunsets create the perfect backdrop without taking away from what matters most the people in front of my camera.
For this session, this sweet African American couple chose the most beautiful neutral color palette. He wore a rich brown outfit that blended perfectly with the earthy desert tones, while she wore an off-white, bohemian-style flowing dress that moved beautifully with every breeze. Their wardrobe choices complemented the scenery so naturally, allowing all the focus to stay on their excitement and love for the baby they’re about to meet.
As the sun began to lower, we captured some of my favorite golden hour maternity portraits. The light was soft, warm, and wrapped around them in the most beautiful way. As daylight faded into sunset, we finished with a few dramatic images against the colorful Arizona sky. Those final moments are often my favorite part of a session because everything slows down, and couples simply enjoy being together.
One detail that sometimes comes up during maternity sessions is the linea nigra. That’s the natural dark line that appears down many women’s bellies during pregnancy. You’ll notice I typically leave it exactly as it is during editing unless a client specifically asks me to remove it.
To me, it’s part of the incredible journey of pregnancy. Our bodies do amazing things while growing a baby, and I love preserving those authentic details. Years from now, I want my clients to look back and remember exactly what this season of life looked like. It’s a beautiful reminder of the life they were carrying, and I think that’s worth celebrating.
