Photographing senior sessions at the Superstition Mountains that never gets old for me.
The desert light, the mountain views, the quietness out there, and the excitement seniors have while stepping into such a huge season of life all come together so perfectly. Superstition Mountains senior photos always feel adventurous, personal, and uniquely Arizona.
Alex has graduated from Pinnacle High School in Phoenix. Alex’s session was one of those sessions I know I will remember for a very long time.
When we first started his senior photos at the Superstition Mountains, he gave me the classic “forced teenage smile.” Moms and dads reading this probably know exactly what I mean. The smile that barely shows teeth while also looking slightly terrified to be in front of a camera. 😂 I didn’t post any here if you are looking for it, he definitely wasn’t comfortable in front of the camera yet.
Honestly, it is one of my favorite parts of senior sessions because I know it never lasts long.
By the second outfit change, everything shifted. Alex relaxed completely, started joking around with me, and suddenly the session stopped feeling posed. It started feeling real.
That is always my goal during senior photos.
I never want sessions to feel stiff or overly serious. I want seniors to walk away feeling like themselves. Sometimes that means I spend half the session acting ridiculous just to make someone laugh naturally. Trust me, I am not a comedian, but I am fully willing to embarrass myself a little if it means getting genuine smiles and authentic moments.
Those are always the photos parents end up loving the most.
As we explored the Superstition Mountains during his senior session, Alex told me all about his plans after graduation. He shared how excited he is to attend ASU and major in business finance, and it was so fun hearing him talk about what is ahead for him.
That is another reason I love senior photography so much. These sessions are about so much more than photos. They capture a season right before everything changes.
One of my favorite moments from Alex’s Superstition Mountains senior photos happened completely unexpectedly.
In the middle of the session, Alex randomly made this ridiculous face at me and explained that he and his dad always make that face at his mom. Since she could not make the session, we secretly added the photo into her gallery for her to discover later.

I absolutely love moments like that because they tell a story years from now. They are personal, meaningful, and completely unique to that family.
Then at the very end of the session, while we were walking back to our cars, Alex pointed toward another group taking photos nearby and yelled:
“Hey! My photographer is better than you!”
I laughed so hard.
I even grabbed a quick cellphone photo with him afterward because the entire evening was just genuinely fun from start to finish.
Later that night, he sent me a text thanking me for the experience, and honestly, that meant so much to me.
Alex was such a kind, respectful young man, and photographing this season for him was truly an honor.
Also, if you are wondering whether it is “too late” to book senior photos, Alex actually waited until the day after graduation for his session. I tell families this all the time. There truly is no wrong time for senior pictures. Whether you schedule months before graduation or afterward, these memories still deserve to be documented.
And if you are dreaming about desert scenery for your session, I cannot recommend Superstition Mountains senior photos enough. It is one of my favorite Arizona locations for seniors who want beautiful mountain views, glowing desert light, and a session that feels adventurous while still being relaxed.
As a Phoenix senior photographer, sessions like this will always have my heart.
