I loved this session because of the location. I usually shoot on the other side of Tempe Town Lake, but this time we headed to Tempe Beach Park, and wow, being by the water completely changed the vibe. A beach in Phoenix? What? It doesn’t exactly scream desert, and yet it felt like the perfect backdrop for MacKenzie. She’s been a competitive swimmer most of her life, so being near the water just made sense, and the photos came out stunning.
MacKenzie graduated from ASU Prep Digital HS in May of 2025, and we immediately started talking swim. As a former competitive swim mom myself, and yes, I cheered on an Arizona State Champion, I could relate, and that made the session feel extra connected. It’s always easier to capture a senior’s personality when you can laugh and chat naturally from the start. So, of course, I got her talking about her favorite swim strokes in the water and being a swimmer.
We explored all kinds of spots at Tempe Beach Park. Under the bridges, we got a mix of soft, pretty light and bold urban vibes with graffiti textures. Her eyes seriously stole the show in so many close-ups. Then came sunset, when MacKenzie changed into a gorgeous blue dress. Some of my favorites were the dock shots, with the warm sun glinting off the water.
And then, because the best moments never come on schedule, we ended with night shots. The sun had set, the bridge lights reflected on the water, and MacKenzie even put her feet in the water for a few magical images. Those senior photography moments were unexpected and perfect, exactly the kind of little spontaneous moments that I truly love and get so excited about. The ones I can’t wait to run home and put on my computer!
It’s funny, shooting at Tempe Beach Park doesn’t feel like being in the desert at all. There’s water, sand, reflections, bridges, it’s almost like Phoenix is secretly trying to be a beach town. Combine that with a senior who’s excited to explore, laugh, and just be herself, and you get a session that’s equal parts fun and beautiful.
