Why a Full Photography Session Matters by a Phoenix Photographer
If there’s one thing I wish every client knew before stepping in front of my camera, it’s this: you don’t need to know how to pose, smile, or act “natural.” That’s not your job. It’s mine.
As a Phoenix photographer, I work with families, couples, seniors, and expectant parents who often tell me they feel awkward in front of the camera or worry they won’t know what to do. That’s completely normal and it’s exactly why a full photography session makes such a difference.
When you hire a professional photographer, you’re not just hiring someone to click a button. You’re hiring someone to guide you, direct you, encourage you, and create a space where you can actually relax and be yourself. And that comfort? It doesn’t always happen instantly.
The First 15 Minutes Don’t Really Count and That’s Okay in a Full Photography Session
Some photographer coaches say the first 15 minutes of a session don’t count. And honestly? I believe them.
Those first moments are for warming up. Getting used to me. Getting comfortable with the camera being there. Shaking off the nerves, the stiffness, the “What do I do with my hands?” thoughts.
I see it all the time, especially with clients who tell me they’re awkward in front of the camera or that they’re worried about their kids not cooperating. At the beginning, everyone is still settling in. Smiles can feel forced. Bodies feel a little stiff. Kids are testing boundaries. Adults are overthinking.
And then… something shifts.
When the Magic Starts to Happen
After those first 15 minutes, shoulders drop. Smiles soften. Kids loosen up. Couples start interacting naturally instead of posing. You stop thinking about the camera and start focusing on each other.
This is the part of the session I live for.
I’ve personally seen it time and time again with the images clients favorite in their galleries, the ones they choose for albums and wall art, almost always come from the middle and end of the session. That’s where the genuine connection shows up. That’s where laughter feels real. That’s where moments unfold instead of being forced.
A full session allows space for this to happen naturally, without pressure or rushing. It gives us time to move, explore, reset, and create something that feels authentic to you.
Why Being Rushed Changes Everything in Photography Sessions
Short sessions can work in very specific situations, but they leave little room for warming up, adjusting, or simply letting things unfold. When time is tight, everyone feels it…kids, parents, couples, and yes, even photographers.
Creativity thrives when there’s breathing room.
When we’re not watching the clock, we can:
- Try different prompts and movements
- Let kids be kids instead of rushing them into smiles
- Explore a location instead of staying in one spot
- Pause, reset, and keep going if someone needs a moment
That freedom is what allows sessions to feel less like a task and more like an experience.
My Intention Behind the Way I Photograph
I want to be intentional about the work I create and the experience I offer. Not just now, but always!
My goal with every session is to give my very best. That means creating space for connection, comfort, and real moments to unfold naturally.
Yes, I will still offer very limited short sessions at certain locations. But my heart is fully in creating sessions where we’re not rushed…where we can explore, adventure, laugh, and take our time.
I want every session to feel meaningful. I want you to walk away thinking, “That was actually fun,” not “I’m glad that’s over.” I want the experience itself to be just as memorable as the photos.
This approach is a big part of my business growth and creative process. It allows me to show up fully present, emotionally invested, and creatively engaged for every client I work with and it allows me to create images that reflect genuine connection, not just posed smiles.
