Maternity Photos with a Horse

Montebello Couple

One thing I always encourage my clients to think about when planning their maternity session is choosing a location that actually means something to them. Of course Arizona has no shortage of beautiful places for photos, but sometimes the most meaningful sessions happen in places that already hold part of your story.

This maternity session was the perfect example of that.

When we started talking about where she might want to take her maternity photos, she mentioned the place where she boards her horse. Horses have always been a huge part of her life. She’s a veterinarian, she’s always loved them, and when she first met her husband she even told him that one day she was going to have a horse of her own.

And now she does.

So including him in her maternity photos just felt right.

Instead of choosing a random location somewhere around Phoenix, we photographed her maternity session at a place that already meant something to her. The white fences, the open space, the mountains in the background, and of course her horse all helped tell a story about who she is in this season of life.

The weather that day could not have been more dramatic in the best way. Thick clouds filled the sky and you could tell a storm was getting ready to roll in. As photographers, this kind of light is always a favorite. The clouds created the most beautiful soft light while the darker skies added so much depth to the photos.

Her horse definitely sensed the weather coming though.

He was a little anxious during parts of the session and not exactly the kind of horse that was going to stand perfectly still and “pose” on command. But that’s the beauty of sessions like this. You don’t force the moment. You work with what’s happening naturally.

And honestly, you would never know from the photos.

Most of the session included her horse beside her, which made the images feel even more personal. These aren’t just maternity photos. They reflect her life, her passion for animals, and the dream she once shared with her husband about owning a horse someday.

Toward the end of the session she changed outfits, and it ended up being one of my favorite parts of the evening. The color she chose popped beautifully against the dark storm clouds behind her and the palm tree lined road.

Just as we were finishing up, the sun began peeking through the clouds in small moments. The wind picked up and gave us the most incredible dramatic movement in her dress and hair. It created such a powerful ending to the session.

Even with the storm rolling in and a slightly anxious horse, everything came together in the most beautiful way.

I love encouraging my clients to choose photo locations that are meaningful to them – no matter what type of session we are photographing…maternity, family, senior grad, and couples. Whether it’s a place where you spend your weekends, somewhere tied to your hobbies, or even a place connected to your work and passions, those personal connections always make your photos feel even more special.

And years from now, those details are what make the memories even richer.

If you’re expecting and thinking about maternity photos in Arizona, I always love helping my clients dream up locations that reflect their story. Sometimes the most meaningful photos happen in the places you already love.
