Want Greenery in Your Arizona Photos? Here’s What You Need to Know

Green Photos in Arizona: The Best Time for Greenery

One of the most common things I hear from my clients living in the desert in Phoenix is:

“I want green trees and forest vibes for my photos.”

And I completely understand why.

If you want green trees, forests, grass, and mountain scenery in your Arizona photos, summer through early fall is usually your best bet, especially in northern Arizona. While Phoenix is at its hottest, places like Flagstaff, Payson, and Prescott are often cooler, greener, and honestly perfect for photos.

And that timing surprises people all the time.

When Is the Best Time for Green Photos in Arizona?

After months of desert landscapes, brown tones, cactus, and heat, there’s something refreshing about imagining photos surrounded by tall pines, soft grass, mountain air, and actual greenery.

It feels different. Softer. More peaceful.

Almost like you left Arizona completely.

But here’s the thing most people do not realize until we start planning their session:

In Arizona, green photo locations are heavily seasonal.

A lot of families and seniors start thinking about photos once fall arrives. That timing works beautifully for desert sessions around Phoenix, Scottsdale, and the surrounding areas. The weather cools down, the sunsets become gorgeous again, and the desert starts feeling alive.

But if your dream photos involve forests, green trees, mountain scenery, or grassy fields, I usually recommend planning those sessions during summer through early fall in northern Arizona.

While Phoenix is hitting triple digit temperatures, northern Arizona can be giving us an entirely different world.

Why Northern Arizona Is So Good for Summer Photos

Summer is usually the season when we’re trying to survive the heat in Phoenix, but it’s one of my favorite times to head north for photos.

Places like Payson, Flagstaff, and Prescott can look completely different from the Valley. You can find tall trees, greener grass, cooler temperatures, mountain scenery, and that forest feeling that people sometimes don’t even realize exists in Arizona.

That is why I always tell clients:

If greenery is important to you, timing matters just as much as location.

Sometimes getting the look you want isn’t really about finding the right place in Phoenix. It’s about choosing the right season and being willing to make a little adventure out of it.

What Happens to Arizona’s Greenery in Winter?

I cannot tell you how many inquiries I receive in January from seniors or families wanting lush green mountain photos after seeing summer sessions online.

The problem is that those photos might have been taken in July, August, or September, when northern Arizona looked completely different.

By winter, many of those same locations can have bare trees, muted grass, snow, or an entirely different feel. They’re still beautiful, but they aren’t necessarily going to give you the lush green look you saved to your inspiration board.

Arizona gives us beautiful scenery year round, but every season brings a completely different look.

That is why I love helping clients choose not only the right location, but also the right time of year for the vision they have in mind.

Green Summer Sessions Just Feel Different

This particular session was such a good reminder of that.

Everything about it felt calm and easy. The greenery, the cooler weather, the quiet surroundings, and having a dog along for the session made it feel more like an experience than simply showing up for photos.

Honestly, dogs tend to enjoy northern Arizona sessions so much more during the summer months too.

Instead of worrying about hot sidewalks and uncomfortable temperatures in Phoenix, everyone gets to relax a little more.

And I think that shows in the photos.

Green Photos Aren’t Just for Family Sessions

I also love sessions like this because they do not need to fit perfectly into a category.

Not every session has to be tied to a major milestone or life event.

Sometimes it is simply documenting a season of life you want to remember.

Maybe it is your relationship with your dog.

Maybe it is your kids while they are still little.

Maybe it is senior photos that feel more like you than a traditional city backdrop.

Those are honestly some of my favorite sessions to photograph because they feel personal and real.

Whether I’m photographing a family, a senior, a couple, or someone with their four-legged best friend, the location should add to the story rather than just give us something pretty to stand in front of.

Plan Your Green Arizona Photo Session Earlier Than You Think

So if you have been dreaming about green summer photos in Arizona, my biggest advice is to start planning earlier than you think you need to.

Don’t wait until January to show me that gorgeous green forest photo you saved and tell me, “I want this.”

I mean…we can absolutely go north.

But Mother Nature may have other plans for the green part.

Summer sessions up north are one of Arizona’s best kept secrets for families, seniors, couples, and even dog-friendly photo sessions.

And trust me, escaping the Phoenix heat for a little mountain air and greenery is almost always worth it.

If you know you want green trees, mountain air, desert scenery, or something completely different but have no idea where to start, that’s part of what I’m here for.

I’ve photographed sessions all over Arizona, and I love helping my clients find a location and season that actually fits the way they want their photos to feel.

Green Summer Photo Session FAQs

When is the best time for green photos in Arizona?

Summer through early fall is usually your best bet, especially if you're willing to head north to places like Flagstaff, Payson, or Prescott.

Can I get green photos in Phoenix during summer?

Sometimes, depending on the location, but Phoenix greenery is much more limited and summer temperatures can make outdoor sessions difficult. Northern Arizona usually gives you more of that forest, grass, and mountain look.

Are northern Arizona locations green in winter?

Not necessarily. Many locations look completely different by winter. Trees may be bare, grass can turn muted, and some areas may have snow. If you have a specific look in mind, the season matters.

Are northern Arizona summer sessions good for dogs?

Yes. Cooler temperatures can make these sessions much more comfortable for dogs than summer sessions in Phoenix, especially when we're spending time walking and exploring during your session.

How early should I plan a green summer photo session?

Earlier than you think. If lush greenery is important to you, I recommend planning around the season rather than waiting until fall or winter to start looking for locations.
