What to bring to your senior portrait session

What to Bring to Your Senior Portrait Session

One of the easiest ways to have an amazing senior portrait session is to come prepared. Don’t worry…I’m not talking about bringing half your bedroom with you! A little planning goes a long way, and packing a few thoughtful items means we can spend less time worrying about forgotten accessories and more time creating photos you’ll actually love.

Whether we’re wandering through downtown Phoenix, exploring Papago Park, or heading to one of my favorite desert locations, these are the things I recommend bringing to every senior portrait session.

So, what do you need to bring to make your session a total success? Let me break it down for you!

Bring Outfits That Feel Like You

Your outfits should tell your story.

Maybe that’s a flowy dress, ripped jeans and sneakers, your favorite concert tee, or your letterman jacket. There isn’t one “right” style for senior portraits. The best outfit is one that feels like you.

I usually recommend bringing two or three different looks:

  • Something casual
  • Something dressier
  • Something that represents a hobby, sport, or your personality

Small details make a big difference too. Jewelry, hats, boots, jackets, and layered accessories help create variety without needing an entire wardrobe.

And don’t worry about where you’ll change. I bring a portable changing tent, so you can comfortably switch outfits even if we’re out in the middle of the desert.

Don't Forget the Shoes

This is the item people forget most often.

Bring the shoes that match each outfit, but also pack a comfortable pair for walking between locations.

If you’ve ever walked around Papago Park in heels…trust me…your feet will thank you.

Bring Props That Tell Your Story

Props shouldn’t feel random.

They should represent something that’s important to you.

Some of my favorite senior session props include:

  • Sports equipment
  • Musical instruments
  • Dance shoes
  • Books
  • Art supplies
  • A cap and gown
  • Your first car
  • Your dog (yes…absolutely bring your dog!)

I’ve photographed seniors with everything from guitars to horses. Those personal touches make your gallery feel unique because no one else’s session will look exactly like yours.

Pack a Small Touch-Up Kit

The Arizona heat has a personality all its own.

A small bag with a few essentials can make a huge difference throughout your session.

I recommend bringing:

  • Hairbrush or comb
  • Lip balm or lipstick
  • Powder if you wear makeup
  • Hair ties or bobby pins
  • Water bottle

You’ll probably only need them once or twice, but you’ll be glad you packed them.

Bring Something to Sit On

Depending on the location, we may be sitting on rocks, grass, or desert trails.

A simple towel or blanket keeps your outfit clean and gives us more posing options without worrying about dirt or cactus needles.

Keep Everything Organized

Instead of carrying a dozen shopping bags, pack everything into one rolling suitcase or duffel bag.

Garment bags help keep clothes wrinkle-free, and smaller pouches make it much easier to find jewelry, belts, or accessories when it’s time to change outfits.

The more organized everything is, the smoother your session will feel.

Should You Bring Someone With You?

Absolutely.

Many seniors bring a parent, sibling, or best friend.

They can help carry outfits, hold your water bottle, keep track of your props, and most importantly…cheer you on.

Some of my favorite behind-the-scenes moments happen because a friend is standing just outside the camera making everyone laugh.

The more organized everything is, the smoother your session will feel.

Remember...This Session Is About You

The most important thing you can bring isn’t something you pack.

It’s your personality.

The goal isn’t to create photos that look like everyone else’s. It’s to create portraits that still feel like you years from now.

Bring the things that make you smile, make you laugh, and tell your story. I’ll take care of the rest.

The Nitty Gritty

Preparing for Your Senior Photo Session

How many outfits should I bring?

Depending on the senior package you choose, two or three outfits usually give us plenty of variety without feeling rushed.

Can I bring my pet?

Absolutely! Just let me know ahead of time so we can choose a pet-friendly location.

What if I forget something?

Don't panic. We'll make it work. I've photographed enough senior sessions to know how to improvise.

Should I bring someone with me?

Yes! A parent or friend can help with outfits, carry your things, and make the experience even more fun.

What's the one thing I shouldn't forget?

Confidence. You don't need to know how to pose or what to do. That's my job.
