Phoenix Summer Photos: How to Beat the Heat

How to Time and Plan Outdoor Photos in Arizona (So You Don’t Melt!)

Phoenix Summer Photos: How to Stay Comfortable in the Heat

If you’ve ever thought Phoenix summer photos are just too hot to handle, I completely understand.

When temperatures start climbing, one of the biggest hesitations I hear is:

“Won’t we be sweating the whole time?”

The answer?

Not if we plan it right.

Phoenix summer photo sessions can absolutely still be beautiful and comfortable. The secret is choosing the right time of day, finding locations that give us some relief from the sun, and sometimes being willing to think outside the typical wide-open desert location.

As a Phoenix photographer, I’ve photographed through plenty of Arizona summers. I’ve learned when the light works in our favor, which locations give us more shade, and when it makes more sense to escape the Valley altogether.

Because yes, we can take beautiful outdoor photos in July without melting into the sidewalk.

Golden Hour or Bust

The number one rule for Phoenix summer photos?

We are not shooting in the middle of the day.

During the summer, I usually plan outdoor sessions around the very last hour before sunset. The light becomes softer and dreamier, the temperatures finally start dropping, and honestly, this is when Arizona really starts to glow.

If you’re a morning person, early morning sessions can work beautifully too. First light gives us cooler temperatures, fewer people, and that same soft light that photographs beautifully.

The exact session time changes throughout the summer because sunset changes too. That’s something I help my clients plan so you don’t have to figure it out yourself.

Choosing the Right Summer Photo Location

Location matters any time of year, but during an Arizona summer, it matters even more.

A beautiful location with absolutely no shade may be perfect in January and miserable in July.

That’s why I look at more than just what a location looks like in photos. I’m also thinking about shade, how far we have to walk, when the sun disappears behind trees or buildings, and how comfortable everyone will actually be while we’re there.

And thankfully, we aren’t limited to wide-open desert landscapes.

Manistee Ranch Park in Glendale has mature trees, greenery, and shaded areas that make it a great option when you want something softer and greener during the summer.

Green Community Parks

I also know a handful of hidden-gem parks around the Valley with grass, mature trees, and plenty of shade.

They may not be the dramatic desert landscape people immediately picture when they think of Arizona, but in the middle of summer, that shade can make a huge difference.

And I’m always happy to help choose one that fits the look you want.

Heritage Square in Downtown Phoenix

Heritage Square in Downtown Phoenix gives us an urban option where surrounding buildings can provide natural shade.

This is a great example of why I don’t just look for “pretty” locations. Sometimes buildings, trees, walls, and other structures give us exactly what we need to create beautiful light while staying out of direct sun.

Salt River

If you want water in your photos, the Salt River can be such a fun summer backdrop.

Water, mountains, greenery, and evening light can make it feel completely different from a traditional Phoenix desert session.

Arizona Falls

Arizona Falls is one of those unexpected Phoenix locations.

You get water movement, interesting architecture, greenery, and a setting that doesn’t immediately scream desert.

Lake Pleasant Regional Park is a little more adventurous, but it can be absolutely worth it if you’re dreaming of a lakeside sunset session.

Hassayampa River Preserve

The Hassayampa River Preserve near Wickenburg is full of greenery and shade.

It’s one of those locations where you can look around and almost forget you’re in the Arizona desert.

Or We Head North

Sometimes the best way to beat the Phoenix heat is pretty simple.

We leave Phoenix.

During June, July, and August, northern Arizona gives us completely different scenery and cooler temperatures. Flagstaff, Prescott, and Sedona can turn your photo session into a little summer getaway.

Tall pines? Yes.

Mountain air? Absolutely.

Not feeling like your shoes might melt into the pavement? Even better.

I sometimes waive my travel fees for northern Arizona sessions during June through August, so if you’ve been dreaming about photos somewhere greener and cooler, summer can actually be the perfect time to do them.

Why Timing and Location Matter So Much

Planning around the heat isn’t only about avoiding sweat.

It changes the entire feeling of your session.

When everyone is comfortable, you’re able to relax. Kids have more patience. Parents aren’t worried about everyone overheating. We can move around, play, laugh, and actually enjoy ourselves.

And that matters because those are the moments I’m looking for.

I want your photos to feel like you, not like everyone is counting down the seconds until they can get back into the air conditioning.

Phoenix Summer Photos Are Absolutely Possible

If you’ve been putting off photos because summer in Phoenix feels too hot, you don’t necessarily have to wait until fall.

We just have to be smart about it.

We can choose a shaded location, plan around golden hour, incorporate water, schedule an early morning session, or head north where the temperatures are cooler.

I’ve photographed through enough Phoenix summers to know that when and where we shoot makes all the difference.

So no, summer photos in Arizona do not have to mean sweaty faces and miserable kids.

We have options.

The Nitty Gritty

Summer Photo Session FAQs

Can you really take outdoor photos in Phoenix during summer?

Yes. Timing and location are everything. I avoid the hottest part of the day and choose locations that work with the summer heat rather than against it.

What is the best time for summer photos in Phoenix?

Usually very early morning or during the last hour before sunset. The exact timing depends on the location and time of year.

Are shaded locations better for summer sessions?

Absolutely. Mature trees, buildings, greenery, and water-adjacent locations can make a big difference in both comfort and lighting.

What if we really don't want to deal with the Phoenix heat?

Let's go north. Flagstaff, Prescott, Sedona, and other northern Arizona locations can give you cooler temperatures and a completely different backdrop.

Are summer sessions good for families and seniors?

Yes. I photograph both families and seniors during the summer. We simply plan the session around the people I'm photographing, the location, and the weather.
